I 295 (RI/MA southbound)

Interstate 295 (abbreviated I-295) is an Interstate route 26.58 miles (42.78 km) in length within the U.S. states of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It serves as a western bypass around Providence, Rhode Island. The southern terminus is a junction with I-95 in Warwick, Rhode Island. The northern terminus is a junction with I-95 in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

Interstate 295 was also planned to be supplemented with an eastern bypass around Providence, to create a beltway.

Interstate 295 serves as a bypass route around Providence for thru traffic between Boston & New York via I-95. It begins at exit 11 off of I-95 in Warwick. Heading north the road interchanges with several major freeways into Providence including RI 37 at exit 3, US 6 at exit 6, and RI 146 at exit 9. The road turns east in between exits 8 and 9. Weigh stations are located both northbound and southbound at Mile Marker 19 between exits 9 and 10, although they are barely used. The Blackstone River Visitor Center and Service Plaza is located between exits 9 and 10 at MP 20 on I-295 northbound. An abandoned rest area is located on the southbound side, opposite the new Rest Area/Visitor Center at Mile Marker 20. The state panned renovating and re-opening it with facilities similar to that on the northbound side, but the northbound plaza never became as popular as hoped and, as a result, the plan was cancelled. After crossing the river, I-295 has two more interchanges in Rhode Island before crossing into Massachusetts. There I-295 has one interchange, exit 1, with US 1 before ending at exit 2, which is for I-95.

In the mid 1950s, the state of Rhode Island introduced plans to build a beltway around Providence, then known as Relocated Route 5. The plan was submitted to the Federal Bureau of Public Roads for inclusion in the Interstate Highway System. A modified version of the plan was accepted by the BPR. In 1960 the plan was changed to build the beltway along a completely new right-of-way. Building began in 1964 and the original route was completed by 1975. The highway was supposed to connect to Interstate 895 which would have completed the other half to the beltway, but Interstate 895 was never built. The road remained largely unchanged until 1999 when the RIDOT released a plan to build a new exit along the I-295. This project was completed in the mid-2000s when the new Exit 5 opened. In 2006, a visitor center overlooking the Blackstone River was built at the old rest area going northbound between Exits 9 and 10, which had closed in 1989. The plan was to build a visitor center on the southbound side as well but this has yet to materialize as the northbound one never caught on.
